Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opening batter Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments made by captain Stokes regarding the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered this message in several interviews in the wake of England's defeat in the second Ashes against the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had let his message to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I needed to have done," said the England leader.

However, following Crawley made 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

The captain made the "weak men" comment after his side were beaten in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The team subsequently went on a break to a Queensland resort between the second and third matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he said his team had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay in contention in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the messaging from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their previous tenure in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of something special going into this game."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's dismissal on day four came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side 207-6 chasing a daunting total of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia require four wickets on the final day to secure an insurmountable three-nil advantage after three matches played.

A loss would prolong the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes series loss.

The current battle will be completed in just 11 days of play – with England losing the initial matches in two and four days respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined more swiftly. Australia have also won in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disappointing," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. They're a formidable side. It was always going to be tough coming here to face them. They entered as the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position In Question

While Crawley's performance in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his short-term place in the England team, Pope looks under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 runs in England's second knock on Saturday, extending his modest returns against the old enemy.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

But, Crawley said any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said he. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is noise from the outside. There is no discussion like that regarding Pope in the camp," Crawley finished.
